Please try again later.<\/strong>&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/serverfault.com\/questions\/798380\/aws-add-option-group\">These guys got me started<\/a>, but I was\u00a0still a long way off, <a href=\"https:\/\/disqus.com\/home\/discussion\/aws-official-blog\/amazon_rds_for_sql_server_8211_support_for_native_backuprestore_to_amazon_s3\/\">this guy finished the missing link<\/a>. The instructions below\u00a0hopefully will help. I wished I would have recorded this but .. this article is my best memory of how I solved it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Connecting was mental too &#8211; I added a firewall rule &#8211; but adding to the default one was the trick that made it work. Now, after doing all this, I see why &#8211; you have to make &#8220;groups&#8221; of this or that and then apply those groups. That is the key to making things work on RDS.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>a) backup your database by logging into the LOCAL instance. R mouse click the dB, tasks, Backup<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To restore &#8211; you need to run a stored procedure\n<ul>\n<li><strong>but first<\/strong>, you have to make an option and a IAM role (<a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/IAM\/latest\/UserGuide\/id_roles_manage_modify.html#roles-managingrole-editing-console\">how to modify a role<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; go BACK to services and click IAM)\n<ul>\n<li>a guy here has<a href=\"http:\/\/ramblingsofraju.com\/sql-server\/aws-sql-server-rds-native-backup-restore\/\"> some hints<\/a> as to what to do<\/li>\n<li>Under &#8220;Option Groups&#8221; create\u00a0a new one. Call it OGrp1 (for fun). Choose all the fun options and do them correctly. Look at your dB instance for the details you require &#8211; they should match up<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Some how (and I lost how I did it, else I would include a link) you need to add the option_name: SQLSEVER_BACKUP_RESTORE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>IAM &#8211; add a role\n<ul>\n<li>go to the Instances console for RDS. Now start again and under Services way at the top, click on IAM\n<ul>\n<li>add a role\n<ul>\n<li>attach a policy\u00a0<strong>sqlNativeBackup<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>make sure the trust relationship is set (link missing)<\/li>\n<li>name your IAM &#8211; I named mine\u00a0<span>backuprestore<\/span><\/li>\n<li>You do not need users &#8211; if you leave users at none &#8211; it means the root user<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Option: click here for general help\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/disqus.com\/home\/discussion\/aws-official-blog\/amazon_rds_for_sql_server_8211_support_for_native_backuprestore_to_amazon_s3\/\">YOU ARE NOT DONE ONCE YOU MAKE AN OPTION<\/a> &#8211; you have to then go to instances and click on &#8220;Modify&#8221; on the database of interest.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AmazonRDS\/latest\/UserGuide\/Appendix.SQLServer.Options.html\">The option is called <span>SQLSERVER_BACKUP_RESTORE<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/serverfault.com\/questions\/798380\/aws-add-option-group\">How to create an option group<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Go to the instances as if you were going to look at your dB details BUT THEN&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Look\u00a0down on the left and under &#8220;Option Groups&#8221; you choose your new named option<\/li>\n<li>at the bottom click Apply Immediately, then click Modify<\/li>\n<li>Wait about 2 minutes,you should see it say &#8220;pending&#8221; next to the option and delete-pending next to the old option<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/console.aws.amazon.com\/s3\/\">Make an AWS bucket<\/a> in the same region as the AWS dB server<\/li>\n<li>copy\u00a0the path of the backup when you do\u00a0so<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Restore dB &#8211; again w. a stored proc<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Syntax\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre class=\"brush: cpp; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\nexec msdb.dbo.rds_restore_database @restore_db_name='Slabsmith', @s3_arn_to_restore_from='arn:aws:s3:::mybucketName\/MydB_20170126_1am.bak';\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Should work &#8211; sorry I missed some steps.
