Feb 16. Try this experiment at home – heat on the side of your house

dark and light house

house with side with sun and shade

Can the kids try this and comment on this before Feb 23?

So look at this house – better yet look at YOUR house. There is always one side that gets all the light from the sun – but RIGHT NEXT TO THIS is the other side that has a shadow (normally this is the North side.) Put your hand on the corner that has had the sun on it for at least an hour. What does the sun side feel like? What does the shadow side RIGH NEXT TO IT feel like? What a difference right?

What colour feels hotter in the sun?

What colour feels hotter in the sun?

Now what about colour? Put your hand on a white or light grey car – the part that has been in the sun for a while? Putting your hand on your car is best – people get real cranky about you touching their car. Now put your hand on the BLACK tire? What sucks up heat more? What other colours suck up more heat from the sun?

Materials - which sucks more heat away from you? What about materials. Does this matter? If you put your hand on a steel pole vs. a tree branch in the winter. Does one suck more heat than the other out of your hand?
